Art Tutor Hanoi – an expat-friendly studio for beginners to progress from pencil to charcoal to oil through long-term art practice in Hanoi.
Practicing Art Consistently – Even With a Busy Job
After more than a year, we finally have the chance to sit down and write about Kathy – one of Art Tutor Hanoi’s most dedicated and inspiring learners.
Kathy first visited us in August 2024. She shared that she had artists in her family, and she wanted to begin her own drawing practice. What followed was a beautiful long-term art practice in Hanoi, built on discipline, curiosity, and determination.
Kathy works full-time as an engineer, but every Thursday evening she came to the studio to draw. Sometimes alone, sometimes with friends, but always present, always committed.
She began with Pencil Basics, where her care and precision quickly stood out. Her graphite drawings became some of the most solid in the studio:
- Clean, even tones.
- Balanced compositions.
- Patient observation.
But more than skill, it was Kathy’s consistency that made the difference. Week after week, she built a strong foundation – the core of any long-term art practice in Hanoi.
After about three months, Kathy had a solid grasp of form, structure, and proportions. That’s when she moved on to Charcoal Basics – an exciting and challenging upgrade.
Honestly, we’ve lost count of how many drawings she made. Her charcoal strokes became strong, broad, and expressive. With more practice, we believe she can master the medium fully.
In November 2025, she officially transitioned to oil painting – a complex medium that requires patience and a deep understanding of form. With her charcoal foundation, we are confident she will do well. Academic art takes time, and Kathy has fully embraced that slow, steady process of experimenting, adjusting, and building on a strong base.
Her progress reflects what we see often in long-term art practice in Hanoi: once the basics are strong, everything becomes possible!
