Collage is the fastest way to fill a zine page with energy. You do not need clean drawing skills — you need scissors, glue, and a willingness to overlap shapes. In our zine making workshop, collage sits alongside pencil and marker work on the same spreads.
Torn-edge collage
Tear magazine paper or colored tissue instead of cutting straight lines. Rough edges catch light and feel more handmade than perfect rectangles. Layer light shapes over dark backgrounds so silhouettes read clearly.
Mix drawing and collage
- Glue a photo or patterned paper, then draw on top with marker
- Cut a window in one page to reveal the page beneath
- Use oil pastel on the edges of collage pieces to unify color
- Add handwritten captions in line pen — handwriting is part of the aesthetic
Printing & decals
When you need a sharp graphic — a logo, a typed quote, a high-contrast photo — use the studio color printer or instant decals. Print on separate paper, cut out, and glue. This hybrid of handmade and printed is what gives zines their punk-DIY character.
