Ice Breakup — acrylic on canvas. A study of thaw and transition, where melting ice becomes a metaphor for movement and renewal.
Teacher critique
Hi! Nice to see your work again. I remember your name from the 2025 Art Tutor Hanoi exhibition. I really liked your paintings there, so I was happy when I saw this one pop up.
I quite like this painting. Even though the colors stay in a pretty narrow range, I can still feel the rhythm in it. It has a quiet, cold atmosphere that comes across really well. The composition also feels solid, so I think you've already got a good foundation.
Just one small thing. I feel like the way the ice is painted is a bit too similar everywhere. It would be more interesting if some parts had different textures or brushwork. Personally I think oil paint is great for exploring texture, but if you're comfortable with acrylic, just keep using it.
Exercise (1 hour): For your next painting, don't worry about making a finished artwork. Just spend an hour experimenting with different textures. Try different brushes, a palette knife, thick paint, thin paint, your left hand, your right hand… even paint with your eyes closed for a few minutes. Just see what kind of marks you can make and how they change the feeling of the painting.
I'm looking forward to seeing your experiment next week.
