Art Tutor Hanoi – where expats explore charcoal, life drawing, and meaningful art therapy story in Hanoi

Learning Charcoal as a Beginner – A Bold Start

Between traveling and meeting new friends, during her final month in Hanoi, Lille still found time to pour herself into art. We’re grateful that Art Tutor Hanoi was part of her journey.

Lille began her 12-session program in September 2025, focusing mostly on charcoal with a few Saturday life drawing classes. From her very first sketches, it was clear that Lille had a natural sense of proportion. Because of this, we encouraged her to try charcoal and it turned out to be a perfect match for her art therapy story in Hanoi.

She really was bold. Her strokes were strong, expressive, and full of life. Charcoal suited her energy beautifully, and with more time and practice, we believe she could truly master the medium. Her progress reflected a true art therapy story in Hanoi, where experimentation leads to confidence.

Returning for One Last Life Drawing Session

In the middle of her course, Lille left Hanoi to travel for two weeks – part of the adventure of living abroad. But when she returned, she came straight back to the studio for one final Saturday life drawing session before flying home.

It was bittersweet.
We were happy to see her again, but sad to say goodbye.
Still, we hope to see her draw again somewhere in the world.

Sometimes taking a break – traveling, breathing, seeing new landscapes – is also part of the creative process.

Clear Progress in a Short Time

What stands out about Lille’s art therapy story in Hanoi is how quickly she grew. Coming from a background where she mostly used pencil, she learned to work confidently with charcoal, handling its dramatic shadows and rich textures.

In just a short time, she learned to draw:

  • Plaster casts
  • Fabric and drapery
  • Glass objects
  • Human figures

She especially excelled at the dark value areas, shaping them in ways that felt dynamic and never flat. This sensitivity to light and shadow shows a strong connection to the charcoal medium – something many beginner artists struggle to develop.

Her journey proves that with the right environment, patience, and encouragement, beginners can make remarkable progress!
