Learned about Impressionism and practiced Monet-style painting with short brushstrokes today, using oil pastels. Both shows their strengths and can learn from each other!Great choice of background, Ibuki! The purple adds a lively touch to the painting. The main shapes (some flowers, or the vase) could be defined more clearly.

K’s painting feels very dynamic with a mix of brushstroke directions. The shapes are clear, and the colors are very harmonious. Can try out another shades for the background.

We explored complementary color mixing today. Ibuki showed a very free and expressive approach with gouache. I encouraged her to use thicker paint and include brighter colors at the same time. Her scratchy brushstrokes in the large orange areas are especially lively and interesting.
K is strong in sketching and has a good understanding of light and dark values. The muted tones in the middle help balance the more saturated reds and greens nicely.

Father and daughter lesson today. They learned to simplify objects and draw with emotion. We ended the class by sketching a ceramic chicken. Ibuki is now drawing bigger and simplifying shapes very well, we’ll continue practicing. K’s chicken is expressive, with nice pencil blending.

Trial class with the Yamato’s family! Each person showed their own world and imagination with colors through their oil pastel work.
Takako’s work is lovely, with warm and gentle colors that create a cozy feeling.

Kazutaka’s work shows nice details and a good awareness of space.

Ibuki’s work is adorable, full of bright colors and a very imaginative world.
