This was Emma’s first time working with charcoal! We started with a cube and an apple, both simple forms with clear structures. Although it was her first attempt with a new medium, she handled it very well and was able to apply what she has already learned.
Looking forward to her next charcoal piece! -

Today we worked on a self-portrait. This piece is very cute, and if we had had more time to finish the background, it would have looked even better.
Emma still has room to grow in this area. With more practice, she will continue to improve.
I hope she can find more joy in drawing portraits in her own way. -

Today we were back to oil painting with a still life setup of three glass jars.
Emma chose to emphasize the middle jar while simplifying the two on the sides, creating a very clear focal point. The background, split into two tones with shadows, added a strong and unique structure to the composition.
She seems to never stops surprising me. -
May 5 – May 8, 2026
Today’s lesson we returned back to Impressionism. This time, instead of applying the style to the whole painting, we focused only on the background, specifically the grass, so that both the main subject and the background could support and enhance each other.
The colors, composition, and character in Emma’s work are very impressive. If anything, adding a bit more value contrast in certain areas would help the painting “pop” even more! -
1/5/2026Back to still life – today she tried some watercolor techniques. Wet-on-wet was a bit more challenging to control, but she handled it well overall.
She pays great attention to detail and is able to compare proportions effectively. She is also very proactive in studying the reference, observing carefully and independently – her observation skills are strong for her age. The overall proportions are good.
We can continue working on line control, especially using longer and more confident lines, and also encourage her to step back and see the bigger picture before moving into details.
Great effort – keep it up!
